Tommies playing with their little pet
Image by National Library of Scotland
Two uniformed men with a small dog. The two men are sitting outside on a pile of sandbags. The man on the left holds the front paws of the dog as it stands on its hind legs. There is another man sitting on the ground with his back to the camera. This relaxed and informal photograph is thought to have been taken by John Warwick Brooke.
‘Tommy is ‘Tommy Atkins, a fictional hero figure representing the average British soldier. During the war many soldiers kept dogs, and other animals, as pets or mascots.
